Tutorials for beginners, intermediate artists, and advanced artists. As beginners in digital art (or art in general), we all make mistakes that we learn from. I’ve written down 9 common beginner mistakes here, and we’re going to look at a solution for each of them.
If you are planning on starting to create art digitally, I have some tips for you to keep in mind.
- Before you buy anything, do your research! Try to figure out exactly what kind of art you what to create and if you are serious about it or not. You will have to choose a new computer, tablet and software according to your needs and to your art style. Watch reviews on YouTube of all the different kinds of tablets, software, pens etc. Don’t spend money on hardware or software you will probably never use.
- Patience is key! If you’re new to digital art, it will take some time to get used to it and to produce something decent. Don’t give up just because you can’t figure it all out in a week, give yourself some time to learn and also try to enjoy this learning process. Tutorials are all over the Internet. Try looking up your favorite artist and learn from them. Imitating can be a very good way to learn new techniques and you will develop your own personal style automatically after a while.
- Try to be organized with your files. I myself have a lot of trouble with this, but trust me when I say that it will save you a lot of time if you properly name every file you are working on. This way you will find everything on your computer a lot faster and possible masterpieces will not get lost.
- Do back-ups! This will save you a lot of tears if you are working on a computer that tends to die on you from time to time. You will be forever grateful that you have not just lost 3 hours of hard work. (Yes I have been there…)
- When you finished an artwork, be sure to open the file on a different computer screen before publishing it online. Sometimes you will see that colors don’t match or that you have forgotten about a few lines here and there. Always do a last edit before you post your art online, it will look more professional.
- Have fun! This is the best tip I can give you. Digital art can be frustrating sometimes, definitely for beginners, but it is important to remember to enjoy the process. Look back to older works and you will see a big difference without a doubt, seeing yourself progress will be your best motivation.
