Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher, and Affinity Photo have all been updated to version 1.9, bringing new tools and features to both the macOS and iPadOS apps.

New Affinity Designer Update

Affinity Designer, touted as an alternative to Adobe's Illustrator, now has a new contour tool, allowing users to add contours and line offsets to shapes and paths.

Also added to Designer is the ability to place linked images within the document, reducing file size and allowing for easier collaborative working.

Publisher, Affinity's desktop publishing software, has faster IDML importing. Also new is the ability to bundle image and font resources from a project into a folder via the 'Package' feature. This feature allows users to effortlessly transfer resources to another system, simplifying collaboration and print production.

Users can now set PDF's to 'passthrough' in InDesign as well, enabling 100% fidelity upon export. Users also can integrate text and image links into a document from external data sources with the newly added data merge feature.

Affinity's Photoshop rival, Affinity Photo, gains several improvements to its RAW engine, new linked layer functionality, path text, and a new mode to control the stacking of astrography images.

The word is out today that version 1.9 is available for the Affinity apps: Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher. And, wow, what an update! Along with strong enhancements to current tools, there are a number of exciting new features in all three apps.

I'll talk about a couple of my favorite new features here and cover the updates more in-depth over the next couple weeks. Note that I will be concerned with the Desktop versions of the software (what I use) in my articles, and not the iPad versions. Designer

Affinity Designer was the first of the Affinity apps that grabbed my attention a few years back, so I'll talk about this one first. If you head over to the Affinity Spotlight website, you can check out their list of top 5 features in version 1.9 here.

  • Select Same and Select Object - this is just an incredible feature to have, especially if you are working with complex design and need to quickly locate certain pieces within it. Not only can you change properties of things selected in real-time, but it's generally just a great way to find things and keep your work organized!
  • Contour Tool - An equally incredible new feature in version 1.9 is the powerful Contour tool, which you can use easily to add a contour to any object, or quickly adjust the width of open curves. But, that's not all. Shape creation is wonderful with this tool.

Affinity Photo

I'll admit I only recently started using Affinity Photo more fully, but it is an incredible photo editing app. While Serif points out their picks of the top five features of Affinity Photo 1.9 here, I find my favorites didn't make their top 5.

  • Live Liquify - this incredible new feature allows you to perform liquify operations non-destructively using a filter, rather than changing a pixel layer itself. LOVE this!
  • Divide Blend Mode - Absolutely wonderful feature to correct color casts, and do some really great adjustments to photos.
  • Custom brushes from layer selections - now you can quickly take a selection from your work, make it a brush, and change its characteristics as you wish. I must note that this feature is also available in Affinity Designer 1.9 as well.

Affinity Publisher

I have been using Affinity Publisher quite a bit lately for a couple projects I'm working on. It is a wonderfully intuitive desktop publishing app, and with full integration of Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo through what they call Studio Link (if you own all three apps), it is beautiful. You can read about the top 5 features at Affinity Spotlight here.

  • Save as package - with this new option you can now package your document with all its related content (fonts, images, etc.) for sharing with collaborators, or to send off for printing.
  • Configurable bleed and margin colors - though maybe a small feature, but surely a helpful one. With the ability to change the color of these guides, it is much easier to see over certain layouts and images for these old eyes.
